I was trying to find out the meaning of some odd words today and I noticed that it is a little annoying to open Microsoft Word or go to a site to get the meaning if I have to do this a lot of times a day. I thought of downloading a dictionary tool but that is not allowed in my office. So I did a little googling and find out a couple of sites which provide a ‘word to meaning lookup’ feature. I even got some sites providing a web service for lookup. But I couldn’t download a dictionary database with a good number of words in it. So I decided to write a small tool that will go and pull the information from one of these sites and display in a neat manner. Some of the considerations were easy deployment, low size, open source, less hassles for the user and a shortest development time. So I decide to go for an HTML application (.hta: not that popular but good enough for this kind of tasks). So I did it and here is the dictionary tool (rename the file to “wordweb dictionary.hta”). Here is an alternate link (ZIP file). The tool is fetching information from WordWeb site. I am still not sure if the tool is going to violate any copy right rules or not. Let me know your comments. I hope this will be useful for you. Beow is a screen shot…

Hello Faiz,
Thanks for such a great idea. It seems useful for all those who are lacking english word power.
But can you please specify the criteria to display the result. As I tried in Internet explorer, but it is showing some error on the page. I tried in Firefox and Chrome too, but tere it is not working. Is there any specific configuration that I have to set before using this tool.
HI…
